Communicate:
Webwide is a subscription-based service which gives users a flexible
means of accessing information online. This is totally innovative
software and is the only product of its kind in the world. It
will help any reader who has difficulty accessing the text in
standard English language web pages.
Just
in time support:
Browse
in a normal view until you reach a page where you need a bit of
help, then click on the view button to see it in your preferred
style. Set font details and background colours to suit your preference.
You can hear the pages read with speech synthesis.
Browsing
in normal view, with speech support
Many
web pages are too complex for users with learning disabilities
or those who have difficulty with text.
You
can hear any part of the page spoken by clicking on the speak
icon. The program will speak sentence by sentence, highlighting
the currently spoken word. Links can be spoken before they are
selected.
Viewing
the simplified layout in Text view
Webwide
can take a normal web page and sort the layout so that it is presented
as a clearer, less distracting single column.
You
may choose to preset the text size and colour, as well as the
background, to aid people with visual disabilities, whilst still
including any graphics from the site.
Viewing
the simplified layout with symbol support
Change
into symbol view and the text is automatically supported by symbols.
You can choose between the coloured and black & white Widgit
Rebus symbols. These have a vocabulary of over 20,000 words.
Finding
your favorite sites
You can
save your favorites through an easy to access manager. You can
add an icon or graphic to remind you what the site is about. There
is also a web portal that has links to sites that work well in
symbols.
Symbols
are accessed over the Internet, not from your machine
Widgit
are constantly updating the online repository of symbols and vocabulary
that powers Webwide. Because Communicate: Webwide is a subscription
service, the symbols don't need to be installed on your machine.
This means that you will get access to new symbols and extended
vocabulary instantly.
Every
time the program is launched any available updates are installed,
so you'll never need to worry about upgrading to receive new features.
What
do you need?
You need
an Internet account. When you take out a Webwide subscription
you will receive a small program that is installed onto your computer,
a user name and a personal password. You can install the software
onto any machine from which you would like to access your Webwide
service. Then when you log on to a machine that has this software,
you will be able to browse the Internet in Webwide.
Can
I use this at home as well as in my school or centre?
The software
can be installed on both school or day centre machines, and in
the homes of account holders, so that the Internet can be browsed
from different locations at different times. Each account holder
has their own username and password. Their preferred settings
are saved on the Webwide server and can therefore be accessed
from any computer with Webwide installed.
Can
my organisation have a number of user accounts to allocate as
we wish?
Each
purchasing organisation can have group accounts for the number
of users they need. The individual accounts can be re-allocated
as required.
