Under the recently agreed DSA arrangements students will receive the Disabled Student's Allowance when they have evidence of their disability and have a DSA Needs Assessment report povided by an approved Assessment Centre.
Although there is no DfES funding for diagnostic assessment through the DSA Scheme many students entering Higher Education will already have reports prepared while they were at school or at an FE College. The Local Education Authority (LEA for your school) or Learning and Skills Council (LSC for your FE College) will probably have paid for these reports.
Students who haven't had an assessment before they start their degree level course will need an assessment report from a specialist tutor or psychologist. ou can pay yourself but it can be quite expensive, for example a Chartered Educational Psychologist's report is likely to cost over £300 and more if ccomplex cases.
Although most Universities and Colleges will have some funding for students who cannot afford to pay for an assessment themselves there isn't a great deal of funding available and most students have to pay for their initial diagnostic assessment. The Disability Officer at your University or College will know if any funding is available.
If the existing reports are out-of-date they will need to be up-dated and this will take less time, and consequently cost less, than the original assessment.
Hughes&Co undertake diagnostic assessments of adult students, especiall those who have specific learning/processing difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention deficit and htmlerger syndrome which are accepted by LEAs as evidence for a DSA application. These assessments are usually undertaken at the student's University, College or home.
