Higher Education Institutions such as Unversities and Colleges and Further Education Colleges all have a specialist tutor (disability Officer) who co-ordinates advice and support for students who have disabilities. The job titles they have been given vary widely but what they actually do is broadly similar!
The Disability Officer should be your first port of call when you have difficulty studying because of a disability while at University or College. Their contacts and local knowledge will help you identify and arrange any adjustments and support you might need. Whatever information or services you need they should be able to point you in the right direction.
Most Disability Officers work with a team which can advise and support students who have disabilities. Sometimes this team is part of Student Services and sometimes it is a free standing service. Sometimes there are separate services for dyslexic students and those with other disabilities.
The Disability Officer is usually the person who co-ordinates the University or College's response to your request for support and adjustments. With your agreement, they will discuss you needs with your Academic Department and will advise you what you need to do if you decide to apply for the Disabled Student's Allowance (DSA). They often have funds to pay for diagnostic assesments and reports which the LEA cannot authorise.
If you would like some advice or information about disability and study at degree level or if you need a quotation for specialist equipment and services though the Disabled Students' Allowance, please contact us.
